Some generations ago at a gypsy orgy, ancestors of Jim Morrison, Frank Zappa and Borat intermingled over several cups of fermented borscht. As a direct result of that celebration, Eugene Hutz was introduced to the world.
I first came across Eugene two years back at the UC Berkeley gym. Desperate to escape the tedious mechanical bicycle, my roaming eyes fixed themselves on the overhanging TV screen playing music videos silently. What I saw was an explosion of color, energy and dynamism that struck a deep impression even without being able to hear the music.
"Hmm, I'm gonna have to follow up on this band someday .. This is exciting!"
This past weekend, I came across the DVD below, and thus my reunion with Eugene was complete.
p.s. - Unknowingly, I also came across Eugene in the semi-decent film "Everything Is Illuminated." He played the unforgettable role of Alex, the taxi driver.
p.p.s. This is the original "Gogol Bordello" video I saw at the gym, but this one is probably my favorite.
